I highly recommend booking this tour with a guide from Tabirai. While you are free to explore the trail on your own during the mid-to-late August season, there were several bear sightings on the trail prior to my arrival.

Our guide, Fuji-San, was competent and knowledgeable, which gave me confidence despite the bear threat. His English was good and the passion he had for nature made each learning experience genuine and meaningful. Fuji-San greeted me inside the hotel lobby and picked up the rest in our tour group. I had on tennis shoes and he provided rubber boots free of charge as the trail was muddy that day.

The only downside was that we just saw two of the five lakes due to a bear sighting. This was out of their control as the park enforces this for the safety of everyone. Even though the tour had to be cut short, our guide accommodated us and still made it enjoyable.
